Singapore's 561 mechanical PEs: what the register tells us in 2026

An analysis of PEB's directory: how many mechanical Professional Engineers practise in Singapore, how old the pool is, and how thin the pipeline has become.

Key figures, as at 1 November 2026

  • 2,775 Professional Engineers hold a practising certificate in Singapore. 561 (20.2%) are mechanical.
  • That is about one practising mechanical PE for every 11,000 people.
  • The median practising mechanical PE was registered in 2007. 27% were registered before 2000.
  • New mechanical registrations average about 20 a year (2020 to 2024).

Each sprinkler system, chilled-water plant and sanitary stack that needs a mechanical PE's endorsement in Singapore passes through one fairly small group of people. We wanted to know how small, so we downloaded the Professional Engineers Board's open directory of PEs with a practising certificate from data.gov.sg on 1 November 2026 and counted.

Mechanical PEs make up about a fifth of the practising profession. Divide Singapore's population of 6.11 million (June 2025) by 561 and you get about one practising mechanical PE for every 11,000 people. They cover every building, factory and infrastructure asset that needs mechanical endorsement.

Registered is not the same as practising

The PEB's 2022 annual report counted 985 registered mechanical PEs at 31 March 2023, and only 513 of them held a practising certificate, about 52%. Registration records that an engineer qualified. The practising certificate is what allows them to supply professional engineering services today. The gap includes retirees, academics, engineers in roles that don't need a certificate, and people who stepped away for family or other reasons. That last group is the most likely to return, if returning is made practical.

An older pool than its neighbours

The median practising mechanical PE was registered in 2007, five years earlier than the median electrical PE. 152 of the 561 (27%) were registered before 2000, and 116 (21%) before 1995. Registration usually follows a degree and several years of supervised practice. So it is a fair inference that a large share of those registered before 1995 are in their late fifties or older, and many will retire within the next decade.

The pipeline: about twenty a year

The PEB's 2024 annual report shows new mechanical registrations of 19, 15, 11, 31 and 26 for 2020 to 2024: 102 engineers in five years. The largest single-year group still practising is the 2023 cohort, with 34 mechanical PEs. One of them is Er. Jessica Yip, registered on 26 January 2023.

The flow into the pipeline is also narrowing. Engineering's share of university students has fallen from nearly half in 2003 to 22% in 2024, and interest in traditional mechanical and electrical courses at polytechnic level has slowed. At about twenty registrations a year, the mechanical register roughly replaces its retirements but does not grow. Meanwhile demand keeps rising: an ageing building stock needs M&E renewal, Green Mark 2021 is raising energy targets, and CORENET X is moving submissions to digital models.

Method

We downloaded the PEB's "Directory of Professional Engineers with Practicing Certificate" from data.gov.sg on 1 November 2026 (2,775 records) and grouped it by the Branch field and the year in DateofRegistration. The directory reflects information at the date each practising certificate was issued. It excludes registered PEs without a practising certificate and specialist-PE categories, which are listed separately.

Frequently asked questions

How many mechanical Professional Engineers are there in Singapore?

As at 1 November 2026, 561 mechanical PEs held a practising certificate, out of 2,775 practising PEs across all branches (PEB directory, data.gov.sg). Including engineers without a practising certificate, the PEB counted 985 registered mechanical PEs at 31 March 2023.

Is there a shortage of mechanical PEs in Singapore?

The public data points to a tight supply. About 20 new mechanical PEs register each year, 27% of practising mechanical PEs were registered before 2000, and engineering's share of university students fell from nearly half in 2003 to 22% in 2024.
